Recollections of Captain Wilkie by Arthur Conan Doyle (1895) Read by Greg Wagland.
Hi. Here's a tale I first read today in which we meet a character who seems like a curious hybrid of Watson and Holmes travelling in a railway compartment with a rather dodgy geezer. It's quite a jolly tale all in all.
Was that an Oscar Wilde quote I spotted, early doors?
I recorded this story on an sE dyna something or other at my desk and not in my studio. Sounds ok but not 10/10 and quickly mastered on the hoof. Excuses, excuses.
Enjoyed getting back to recording some Conan Doyle and hope to unearth a few similar gems over the next few weeks, unless of course the sunshine draws me into the 'outen world'.
As usual, this has been Greg Wagland, recording for Magpie Audio in my palatial home in the UK.
Cheers!

The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes (1894) Full Audiobook 12 Adventures read by Greg Wagland

At last, all in one very long video, The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes. Some people seem to prefer them to hunting round to find the individual tales. This is, of course, a compilation of stories already available on the site. The dozen adventures that comprise the The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes were first published individually in The Strand magazine but brought together and published as a collec...
The Strange Crime of John Boulnois from The Wisdom of Father Brown by G. K. Chesterton

Find out what the strange crime is and whether Mrs. Boulnois really is a floozy! Rather a good one, I think. But what do I know! Father Brown at his best! Discuss. Read by Greg Wagland for Magpie Audio © Magpie Audio 2023

This is a great story set at the time of the Boxer Rebellion in China. Conan Doyle later dramatised the story and presented it as a play in 1928. A group of characters including a French priest, a German commandant, a Scottish presbyterian minister and a British diplomat, among others, are under siege. Bullets and food are quickly running out. Will the relief column get to them in time? Will th...

This is rather a fun one, I would say, although one man's fun is another man's poison so to speak. Anyway, a Colonel, a Major, a doctor and a ward plus the unassuming Father Brown make for an interesting cast of characters in a story which ends somewhat explosively, but not in a manner you might predict. Enough waffle. Please enjoy. If you have enjoyed this recording on a rather splendid Rode N...
The Green Flag by Arthur Conan Doyle. A story for our times?

The desert. Two armies meet. There are discontented soldiers in the British Army. (In every army?) Which flag do they truly serve when push comes to shove? Find out in this ripping gripping yarn. This story was written over a century ago. Therefore the language and sentiments expressed in it may not conform to modern sensibilities and sensitivities. Read by Greg Wagland for Magpie Audio.

Another curious tale about Father Brown which digs into journalism as it was/is really practised, the family history of the Dukes of Exmoor, the ever present theme of disguise and disguises and the minor medical outcome of having a decanter bashed into the bonce. It's a weird one but some rather interesting moments: the usual curates egg. Because today I had numerous things to do and worry abou...

Here is another story from the 1914 collection of tales titled The Wisdom of Father Brown. It's an interesting tale of numismatists, shrimping in South Wales and rather strange pub in a mews in Fulham. Was it Fulham? Anyway, the lesson here may well be 'Don't be greedy and go on the rob!' There may be some other nuances that I have missed but I'm sure somebody will expand on them in the comment...

This is set in London in the heart of Theatreland. We're backstage, there are suitors, a leading lady and leading man, mirrors, make-up, cozzies and no doubt a few bottles of Rescue Remedy and a dresser! Settle back, listen to the orchestra tuning up in the pit and leave it to Father Brown to sort out any untoward happenings. Dark but funny in parts. All human life is here! It's read by me, Gre...

Here's another Father Brown story, with echoes of the Dreyfus affair. It's set in Paris with our old friend Flambeau putting in an appearance. It's rather profound - so perhaps someone could take the time to explain it to me! It's read, as usual, by me, Greg Wagland, for Magpie Audio. Recorded on an Aston Element, which is an interesting microphone which I snapped up recently for a very good pr...

The Absence of Mr Glass by G. K. Chesterton from The Wisdom of Father Brown (1914). Detective story

This story was written for the collection The Wisdom of Father Brown, published in 1914, following the success of The Innocence of Father Brown. I rather like the writing and this story is quite fun but I'm a little surprised that GKC or his editor chose this as the opening tale for the new collection as the plot is perhaps just a trifle, er, how can I put it, thin / predictable. Not wanting to...

Yes, Greg, I'm only about 24 minutes in (btw, I've never read this story, only seen a film version that I barely recall)... And the two friends walking through Paris that night, when the Frenchman tracks the thought process of his friend from the point of being slightly bumped by the fruitier(sp)... Until the point of noticing he had retrieved his proper posture while walking.... Instantly reminded me of a certain vignette from a SH story, when Holmes and Watson are just chilling in the sitting room at 221B, engaging in no conversation, and Holmes finally 'answers' Watson, who had in fact not spoken at all, and to Watson's astonishment~at least until all is explained~Holmes describes the doctor's thought patterns simply by observing his facial expressions and subtle movements. Just now getting to reports of the crime.....

(spoilers) are we not touching upon the fact that the mother's a bitch? Forget the guy, she's the horrible one, and I was guessing it was her mother's scheme, which would make a lot more sense. These stories are kinda weak, go play tabletop, this stuff aged really poorly 😅

I read all the story of Sherlock Holmes by Conan Doyle in French, and two in english ( the Baskerville Hound and the greeck interpreter) you have to begin to that story, because it's the one were you learn the most about Sherlock Holmes and Watson, but after, in the other books, you learn some other think, but for me if you'll have to read just one it's this one. Thanks for this video, so I could work on my pronunciation, and read this story in English at the same time, thank you so much !
